Our Team

  • Hailey Darrow (she/her), Content Coordinator

As the daughter of two teachers, being an educator is in Hailey’s blood. After graduating from UC Santa Barbara, Hailey started at the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) using her teaching skills as a marine science instructor. With her affinity for teaching, organizational skills, and kind demeanor, it wasn’t long before she become a weekend administrator during her time at CIMI. Later, she continued on to work at the Alaska Sea life Center doing even more work as a marine educator that frequently used social media to get more people engaged with the ocean. Now she works to give outdoor education opportunities to high school students interested in taking a gap year before college. With her knowledge, skills, and can-do attitude, she’s helping JS spread all of it’s content across all our platforms on social media.

  • Heidi Johnson (she/her), Content Advisor/Editor

Originally from Washington state, Heidi was never a stranger to the outdoors and wildlife, having been surrounded by the ocean and mountains for most of her life. From the pristine wilderness of Alaska to the tropical waters of Bonaire, Heidi has traveled all over the world getting hands on experience in marine biology. Through all of her travels she worked all kinds of jobs in the field of wildlife/ marine biology including being a marine science instructor, divemaster, stream surveyor, and naturalist guide, and now works as a full time aquarist. One reason Heidi has been so successful with her works is due to her positive demeanor, humor, and keen eye for detail. These qualities made her the perfect person to ensure all of Jules of the Sea’s content is up to professional standards.

  • Ryan Léon (his/him), Social Media Strategist

From the time he was beating his younger brother Jules at video games, Ryan has always been adept at using cunning strategies. Ryan’s wit carried throughout his academic career as he was in multiple academic honors programs while pursuing degrees in nuclear engineering and physics at Morehouse College and the University of Michigan. Be sure not to mistake this brainiac for a stick in the mud though! Ryan did an engineering internship in France, he’s been skydiving with his brother Jules, and has become a master baker/chef in the kitchen. Also both Ryan and Jules developed very similar senses of humor and love for puns, which makes Ryan the perfect light hearted, quick witted, and hilarious person to help keep steering JS in the right direction.
